A woman is understood to be recovering in hospital after being found seriously injured in a stairwell in St Andrews.
Police were called to Freeborn Court in the Abbey Park Avenue area of town just after 11pm on Wednesday night and there has been a police presence there overnight as officers carried out investigations.
A 57-year-old woman, who one witness described as being “covered in blood”, was taken to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital for further treatment, although her injuries are not considered to be life threatening.
Inquiries are ongoing and police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them as soon as possible.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police in Fife were called to an address in Abbey Park Avenue, St Andrews, around 11pm on Wednesday January 31 following a report that a woman had been found injured.
“The 57-year-old was taken to Ninewells Hospital with non life-threatening injuries and enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding this.
“Anyone who may have information which can help can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3876 of January 31.”
