A convicted murderer from Fife has been killed at Glenochil Prison.
Kirkcaldy killer Michael Mowatt, 46, died in hospital after being stabbed in the neck by a fellow inmate at the Alloa jail on Saturday.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested and is expected to appear at Stirling Sheriff Court on Monday.
Mowatt was jailed for life in 2001 after he was convicted of battering his friend Bruce Connolly to death to steal drugs from a flat in Alexandra Street, Kirkcaldy.
The heroin addict, from the town’s Hayfield Road, beat his victim with a hammer or other blunt instrument in the killing in 1999.
He had previously served a five-year sentence for armed robbery.
The court heard how Connolly had been found lying on a mattress in his flat by former girlfriend Michelle Pitcairn.
He had been dead for at least two days.
Police Scotland confirmed on Monday that a 33-year-old man had been arrested following the murder of a prisoner at HMP Glenochil.
In a statement they said officers were called to the prison at around 12.50pm on Saturday.
“A 46-year-old prisoner was taken to the Forth Valley Royal Hospital where he later sadly died,” they said.
“The man is due before Stirling Sheriff Court on Monday February 19.”
Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
