A reminder of the symptoms of meningitis has been issued following the death of an adult in Fife from the disease.
The patient, from central Fife, passed away after being admitted to the Victoria Hospital, in Kirkcaldy, with meningococcal meningitis.
NHS Fife stressed that the meningococcal disease is not particularly infectious, spread only through prolonged close contact, and that those in close contact with the deceased had been identified and prescribed antibiotics.
Consultant in public health medicine, Dr Chris McGuigan, said: “Whilst an uncommon infection, invasive meningococcal disease can be very dangerous so it is particularly important to know what to look out for in terms of symptoms.
“These can include fever or vomiting, severe headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, drowsiness, and rash that does not disappear if pressed with a glass.
“Young children may refuse food, appear drowsy or agitated and have unusual body movements or a shrill, moaning cry when handled.
“If you notice these symptoms you should seek urgent medical advice and treatment.”
People were advised to call their GP or NHS 24 on 111 where any combination of the symptoms is present.
