Kirkcaldy’s town centre has been dealt another hammer blow with the sudden closure of a popular fast-food restaurant.
Signs indicating that the Subway in the Mercat Shopping Centre is no longer trading went up on Thursday afternoon, less than a day after it is understood the news was broken to stunned staff.
Eight jobs could potentially be lost with the disappearance of the popular chain from the town’s main shopping centre, although it is thought staff will be given the chance to redeploy to other branches.
No-one was available for comment at Subway, but it is understood the company has decided not to renew its lease due to high rates levels.
One shell-shocked customer said: “I think it’s absolutely shocking what they’ve done and how they have treated the staff.
“They’ve apparently been told they can take redundancy or get hours elsewhere, but they’ve not been told what they are being offered.
“Most of the staff don’t drive, and the nearest branches are in Glenrothes or at the Gyle in Edinburgh.
“It’s a sign of the times with the High Street at the moment and it’s really sad.”
