The accident happened just before 1pm on the southbound carriageway near to junction three at Halbeath.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they received the call at 12.48pm and sent crews from both Lochgelly and Dunfermline fire stations.
Miraculously, no one was trapped in the overturned car.
Fire crews made the car safe and hosed down the carriageway as there had been a diesel spill.
Police reopened one lane at 1.45pm while lane two remained closed to allow debris to be cleared.
Long tailbacks soon formed, however, with drivers facing long waits of 40 minutes or more.
