A Kirkcaldy street was cordoned off for several hours on Saturday following an early morning assault.
A young man is in a serious condition in hospital in Edinburgh following the incident, said to have involved a number of other people, in the Templehall area of the town.
The nature of his injuries have not been revealed.
Police were at the scene from the early hours of the morning and a section of Lismore Avenue was taped off at the junction with Arran Crescent as officers conduct door-to-door enquiries.
Scenes of crime officers in white suits were also involved.
Police Scotland said suggestions that a body had been found were untrue and insisted there was nothing to suggest rumours of firearms involvement were correct, although neighbours reported hearing a loud bang.
A spokesman was unable to confirm the exact nature of the incident other than to say someone had been assaulted.
The street reopened shortly before 4pm, although enquiries are said to be continuing.
