Police are investigating the “unexplained” death of a one-year-old boy in Dunfermline.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the tragedy, a home in a group of multi-storey flats near the town centre, on Wednesday May 2.
It is believed the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in Fife are investigating the death of a one-year-old boy.
“Police and emergency services attended an address in the Broomhead Drive area of Dunfermline on May 2, where sadly the child was pronounced dead.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing.”
The youngster was named locally as 19-month-old Joshua Akinola who lived with his mother Cheryl Gaffney.
One neighbour rushed to the distraught mum’s aid when he heard her screams.
Talking to a national newspaper, Gordon Shaw, 30, told how he tried to revive the tot who he found slumped on a coach in the flat’s living room.
An operator gave Mr Shaw, who is a student, instructions on giving mouth to mouth.
“His mum was hysterical.
“She was running back and forwards saying ‘Please try to save him’.”
Paramedics took over but it is belied the youngster was unable to be resuscitated.
