A car stolen from Kirkcaldy is believed to have been used to ram raid an Edinburgh supermarket.

The break-in in the early hours of Thursday morning is the second crime in a matter of hours in which the 2015 Audi Q5 is reckoned to have been used.

Balaclava-clad men jumped from an Audi Q5, broke in to a supermarket in the city’s West End and tried to steal an ATM.

On Wednesday morning the same type of vehicle was used during a break-in to a supermarket in Midlothian.

Police reckon the get-away used in both incidents was the blue Audi Q5 taken from Inchkeith Crescent, Kirkcaldy, on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Graham Grant said: “This is the latest incident involving the stolen Audi from Kirkcaldy and officers from Fife, Midlothian and Edinburgh are all working together to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

The break-in at Sainsbury’s, Shandwick Place, happened at around 3.30am.

Members of the public saw three men get out of a dark-coloured Audi and force entry to the store.

They pulled the ATM from an outside wall but when police arrived the cash machine was found lying in the road.

They men sped off in the Audi towards the West End.

Four men forced entry to Roslin Supermarket on Wednesday and made off in a dark-coloured Audi at around 2.50am, with a three-figure sum of money.

The Audi stolen in Kirkcaldy – registration J9 JDF – was taken some time between midnight and 4am on Tuesday.

The crime is being linked to a similar incident in the town’s Seafield area on April 27.

Police hunting those responsible have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Grant, who is in charge of the community investigation unit, said: “While the men were successful in gaining entry to the shop, they have been unable to steal the ATM and have left it in the street before making their escape.

“We are continuing our liaison with the store, but it appears nothing has been stolen at this time.

“If you have any information that can assist with these ongoing inquiries then please contact police immediately.”

Reports can be made bia 101, quoting incident number 364 of May 17 (Shandwick Place), 248 of May 16 (Roslin), 259 of May 16 (Inchkeith Crescent) or 400 of April 27 (Seafield), or to Crimestoppers.
