Much like the burly men birling the hammer, the Highland Games circuit is now in full swing with Markinch playing host to the latest festivities on Sunday.
Hundreds of people headed to the town’s John Dixon for an afternoon of entertainment at the ancient event, which is the first of the Fife Highland Games to take place in the calendar.
Unlike some others, Markinch offers the full range of Games day events including track and field, Highland dancing, drumming, solo piping and the heavy weights.
The Games also stage the oldest pipe band contest in Scotland and a total of 18 bands declared for this year’s contest, including last year’s champions McKenzie Caledonian.
There were also a variety of fun races for children and their parents, along with a full array of side shows, a fun fair, stalls and trade stands.
The 2018 Chieftain was Pipe Major Jim Banks MBE, who resides in the town and was proud to take on the prestigious role on the day.
