Police investigating a horrific smash involving a stolen car later dumped in Fife are trying to trace occupants of a small car which passed the scene.
They believe those travelling in the small, dark-coloured hatchback may have vital information about the Edinburgh crash which killed 29-year-old Jonathan Smith a fortnight ago.
The occupants, who were travelling toward Fife, are the only potential witnesses known to have been in the area at the time who are yet to be spoken to in the investigation.
Jonathan’s Peugeot 206 burst into flames after colliding with a BMW X5, whose driver was trying to avoid a speeding Audi.
After the collision in Maybury Road in the early hours of May 25, the stolen Audi was ditched in the Cowdenbeath area.
A major investigation was launched and two weeks on police in Edinburgh have reiterated their appeal for information.
Occupants of all other vehicles in the area at the time have been spoken to, as well as numerous members of the public who came forward with information.
They are particularly keen to trace the hatchback, which was travelling north towards the Barnton junction just prior to the collision.
Detective Inspector Graham Grant, of Corstorphine CID, said: “The public response to this investigation has been incredible and all information provided to us is being progressed as we continue our efforts to trace those within the stolen Audi A3 and establish the full circumstances of the collision.
“Having spoken to the motorists who witnessed the incident, the member of the public who admistered first aid and various others, the only individuals we remain keen to trace are those within the small dark hatchback car.
“We do not know if this vehicle travelled towards Fife or elsewhere in Edinburgh so we would urge anyone who owns such a car to think back and if they believe they were driving from the Maybury Roundabout just before 12.30am on Friday May 25, then please come forward.
“I would like to stress again, you have done absolutely nothing wrong and we only wish to speak with you to determine if you have any information that may be of use to our inquiry.
“Likewise, if anyone else believes they have any relevant information and has not already got in touch, please do so.”
Those with information can contact Corstorphine CID via 101 and quote incident number 108 of May 25 or call Crimestoppers.
