Nearly 2,000 students from around the globe will converge on St Andrews this week for its summer graduation ceremonies.
Tuesday is the first of four days of celebrations taking place at the ancient seat of learning, the university where Prince William’s romance with Kate Middleton flourished.
Graduates from 80 different countries, including Scotland, China, Nigeria, Germany and America, will receive their academic awards in the Younger Hall.
They will be joined by five distinguished people who are being given honorary degrees by the university.
Leading figures from the worlds of science, literature and politics will be honoured.
Former Rector, MEP Catherine Stihler, will be awarded an honorary degree on Thursday.
The Labour politician was the university’s 52nd Rector and only the second female to hold the prestigious position.
On Tuesday Jenny Brown, the founder director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival and one of the four founders of Edinburgh’s designation as first UNESCO City of Literature, will be honoured.
Professor Satoshi Omura, the global expert in the field of bio organic chemistry, and Dr Rita Gardner, the former director of the Royal Geographical Society, will both be given an honorary degree.
The week is rounded off on Friday when Professor Sir John Savill, the vice principal and head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh University, is honoured.
