MND Scotland is to invest £250,000 in a new accessible holiday lodge in Fife.
The charity is investing the huge sum to build a bespoke lodge as a part of its accessible holiday service for people affected by Motor Neurone Disease and other disabilities.
Work will start on the state-of-the-art lodge, on Clayton caravan park near St Andrews, towards the end of the year
It has been specially designed for those with MND, a rapidly progressing terminal illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles.
This may cause someone to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or breathe unaided.
The lodge will open in March 2019 and will replace the charity’s holiday caravan which will close permanently this October.
MND Scotland also offers an accessible chalet near Oban.
It aims to provide families affected by MND, and other disabilities, with a chance to take a break from their normal routine and to enjoy a holiday together.
The charity’s chief executive Craig Stockton said: “I’m delighted to reveal that MND Scotland is investing a quarter of a million pounds into our accessible holiday service for people affected by Motor Neurone Disease.
“Due to the physical progression of MND, it can often be challenging for families to take the time out for a break they may desperately need.
“That’s why the new Clayton Lodge has been purpose designed to prioritise space and comfort and will be fitted with an array of helpful adaptations suitable for people with MND and other disabilities.”
The lodge will include a sofa bed and a second bedroom, with two sets of bunk beds, allowing for the lodge to sleep seven in total.
All MND Scotland accommodation can be booked by anyone.
However, those affected by MND will receive a discount and may also be able to receive a Time Out grant from MND Scotland to put towards the costs.
