A large-scale search and recovery mission was launched at the River Leven after reports of a body in the water.
Emergency services were called to the scene near the Bawbee Bridge in the Fife town at around 10.30am on Friday.
A member of the public is understood to have contacted the police after spotting something floating in the water.
Coastguard teams from Leven and Kinghorn were called to the scene before carrying out a search of the area.
The RNLI Kinghorn lifeboat was also launched.
Initial reports indicated a body had been recovered from the water but Police Scotland said that was not the case.
A spokeswoman said: “Police in Fife were called to the River Leven, in the Bawbee Bridge area, around 10.25am on Friday, November 2 following a report of what was believed to be a body in the water.
