The Scottish Deer Centre has issued a heartfelt tribute following the death of its North American wolf pack leader Luna.
The 12-year-old animal was put to sleep after a gradual decline in her health due to old age.
Staff at the centre, based near Cupar, broke the sad news on social media and shared fond memories of her.
The keeper team wrote: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Luna, the matriarch of our North American grey wolf pack.
“Luna arrived with us from West Midland Safari Park in March 2012 with her mate Half-Tail and sons RJ and Baxter.
“From the very beginning it was clear to us that Luna was most definitely the head of the pack and they, and we, couldn’t have hoped for a better wolf to lead them.
“Luna was a lovely, bright, easy-going wolf who took everything in her stride.
“Wily and wise, she knew all the tricks of the trade and always had just the right tactics to get the better of her boys when she wanted to, although she was always just as content lying back in one of her favourite resting spots with her front paws crossed in front of her.
“She was a wonderful mum, and had an excellent relationship with keepers and of course, with Half-Tail prior to his death in late 2015.”
They added: “As a 12-year-old, Luna was officially in old age for her species and we had been supporting her to manage age-related joint issues for some time.
“Over recent weeks, keepers observed a notable deterioration in her health, and in the interests of her welfare, this led to the difficult decision being taken to euthanize her towards the end of last week.
“Luna was an absolute joy to work with from day one and we all miss her terribly.
“We are equally aware that our wolf pack are well-loved by many of our visitors, and we are sure many will share our sadness. Thank you for your support and understanding.”
