Police in Fife are treating a devastating fire at the former Inverkeithing Primary School as “suspicious”.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Roods Road at around 9.20pm on Monday November 19.

Brave firefighters battled through the night to try extinguish the flames were engulfed the historic buildings which has now been left a burnt out shell.

One person in the area was taken to hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation, however no-one was injured in the fire.

The town’s High Street was closed while work continued to dampen down fire pockets on Tuesday, causing traffic chaos in the surrounding areas.

A joint probe was launched by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who now believe the blaze was started deliberately.

Fire crews continued to try and control the fire at the former Inverkeithing Primary School on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Kelly McEwan of Dunfermline CID said: “Through our enquiries we have now established that the fire appears to have been started deliberately.

“This was a large fire which resulted in significant fire service and police resources being deployed and had the potential to cause catastrophic damage to property and life.

“I would urge anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area immediately prior to the incident, or after the fire was alight, to contact us as soon as possible.

“Equally anyone with information to help us trace those involved is asked to come forward immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 4020 of 19 November, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
