Progress is being made on installing CCTV at a powderkeg Fife recycling point.
Council bosses say new data protection regulations have held up the installation of security cameras at the area in the car park at Tesco’s superstore at Duloch. But they have pledged the equipment will be in place “imminently”.
The promise will be welcome news for Dunfermline locals who have been growing increasingly concerned about the amount of rubbish being turfed out there.
Fly-tippers have used the busy site as a dumping ground for some time, leaving a trail of debris behind them.
It has been plagued by issues since last Christmas when mountains of waste were left, making the area inaccessible.
Couches and toilets have been dumped there and council workers have been left to clear up the mess.
A decision to catch the fly-tippers on camera was made a year ago but critics have been frustrated at the lack of progress towards install the neccessary equipment.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor James Calder raised the issue at the City of Dunfermline area committee.
He said: “Many constituents are rightly furious that it is taking so long to put in CCTV at the Duloch Tesco recycling.
“With a minority of people fly-tipping it is important that we can deter this but it is taking far too long to put in place.”
The Dunfermline South councillor added: “It has been almost a year since the decision was made to put in place the CCTV and it is incredible that it is taking so long.”
SNP councillor Ross Vettraino, the convener of the council’s environment, protective service and community safety committee, said the delay was had happened because the council had to ensure the equipment complied with new GDPR regulations.
He said the local authority was also working to ensure it got the best value deal on the equipment.
“Notwithstanding that, it will be installed imminently,” Mr Vettraino pledged.
Mr Calder said: “A lot of my constituents have been incredibly frustrated at the length of this process.
“It’s taken almost a year now.
“I am very keen to hear that the equipment is now here and ask for it to be installed as soon as possible.”
