Mystery continues to surround the death of a young man who was discovered lying in a Kirkcaldy street at the weekend.
Detectives have been working to find out exactly what happened to the man who was pronounced dead at the scene in Adam Smith Court shortly before 9.45am on Sunday morning.
A member of the public is understood to have discovered the victim, who is believed to be 24-years-old, unresponsive in a courtyard area to rear of a block of flats – having appeared to have suffered various injuries.
Police Scotland say their inquiries are ongoing and are treating the death as “unexplained” at this moment in time, although foul play has not been ruled out.
Officers are also working to identify the man’s next of kin before publicly confirming his identity, while a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out in due course.
Scenes of crime officers dressed in their distinctive cover-all suits were at the scene on Monday morning to gather forensic evidence which may help police piece together the events leading up to the discovery of the man.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police in Fife are investigating after a man was found injured in the street at Adam Smith Court, Kirkcaldy, at around 9.40am on Sunday December 23.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.
“Inquiries are ongoing.”
An alleyway leading to the rear of the properties in Adam Smith Court remained cordoned off with police tape.
One local resident, who did not want to be named, said the man’s body was still at the scene on Monday morning covered by a sheet as forensics continued their investigation.
“It was a horrific scene to open the curtains to,” she added.
The Courier understands that the death in Adam Smith Court is not thought to be linked to another incident in the town in the early hours of Sunday morning which left three people with serious injuries.
Two men, aged 42 and 38, and a 31-year-old woman were all found within a property in Cawdor Crescent after police responded to reports of assaults at around 5.30am.
One of the men who had suffered more serious injuries was taken to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, while the other two injured parties were treated at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital.
There was a police presence at the house throughout the day on Sunday and again on Monday morning.
Anyone with information about either of the two incidents in Kirkcaldy over the weekend should contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
