Midwives and staff at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital were more than delighted after Christmas Day brought with it a new bundle of joy for one Fife Couple.
Proud parents Kirsty and Mikey Mitchell welcomed newborn Molly into the world at 1.53am, making her one of the first Christmas babies to be delivered across the UK on such a special date.
Molly weighed a healthy 8lb 12oz when she was born, and it’s fair to say mum and dad – along with all the staff at the Vic’s maternity ward – were smitten from the minute they laid eyes on her.
Kirsty, 23, admitted being a little tired after the birth, but it certainly was worth it.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” she said.
“December 13 was actually her due date but my dad insisted it would be on Christmas Day, and he was right.
“From the very beginning the family were saying it would be Christmas Day, so I think my dad jinxed it!”
Mikey, 25, was equally as chuffed to see his new daughter make an appearance in the early hours, and the whole family will have a hard time forgetting Molly’s birthday in the years ahead.
“During the whole build up I wasn’t sure but you just ended up thinking ‘it might as well be on Christmas Day’,” he said.
“I think we’ve decided to give her a wee birthday celebration in the summer so she doesn’t miss out on anything.
“She’s absolutely beautiful and I’m so proud of Kirsty.”
NHS Fife staff were all decked out in their fancy festive outfits to keep the wards ticking over on Christmas Day, and Amanda Munro, senior midwife in charge, said it was particularly special to be working when Christmas babies arrive.
“It’s lovely and there’s always a nice feel to it,” she said.
“It’s always nice to be first to catch a Christmas baby – we’ve got lots of presents to open and Santa will be going around the ward to say hello to everyone, so it’s a really good day.”
