MP calls meeting after constituency hit by another bank closure

North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins has called for a meeting with Santander after its St Andrews branch was among 140 across the UK to be earmarked for closure.

Mr Gethins is asking bank bosses to confirm the number of jobs being shed.

“Across north east Fife we have seen so many banks, post offices and library closures and communities and local businesses have suffered,” he said.

“It is very disappointing that Santander has decided to close its branch here along with many others in Scotland. I have asked to meet with them as soon as possible and would like more details particularly about job losses.

“The loss of any additional banking provision in north east Fife is very worrying and I am grateful to my Westminster colleague David Linden MP for putting down an urgent question on this in Parliament.”

The St Andrews branch in Market Street will be the first across Tayside and Fife to shut its doors as part of the programme when it closes on May 2.

Kirkcaldy’s High Street branch will close on June 13, adding to the growing number of empty units in the beleaguered town centre.

Branches in Forfar and Brechin will also be axed later this year.

Santander’s head of branch interactions, Adam Bishop, said the decision was made following “extensive consideration and a comprehensive internal review.”

Mr Bishop said: “Having reviewed in detail the usage of this branch, we have found 92% of our customers who use this branch, either at the counter or the cash machines, are also using additional ways to complete their banking – 27% at another Santander branch and 66% through online, mobile or telephone banking.

“This decision will also unfortunately impact a number of our colleagues. We will be working with them to explore redeployment opportunities within Santander or further employment outside of the bank.”
