Thousands of runners and spectators are expected to hit the streets of Kirkcaldy for a new half marathon.
It is thought to the be first time a half marathon will have been staged in the town since the late 1980s.
More than 1,000 participants will set off from the Beveridge Park on a 13-mile route round the town, taking in its three parks.
The Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon has been launched by a group of local runners, with the support of local councillors.
Kirkcaldy-based Paralympian Derek Rae is to act as ambassador, leading the event on Sunday August 25.
News of the race has been welcomed in the local running community, and widespread support is expected from local enthusiasts, including the Kirkcaldy Wizards running club.
A member of the Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon event team said: “People are excited to have a challenge that is on their doorstep.”
Kirkcaldy Central Labour councillor Alistair Cameron has been involved with planning since late last year and said an “amazing and unique route” had been devised.
He said: “We are trying to bring more events into the town alongside our tourism aspirations, and with a large number of runners and groups in the town this seemed the ideal time to bring back this event.
“The Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon will, I am sure, be a huge attraction to the running community far and wide.
“We still have to have final approval from both the police and transportation before we can officially launch the race, but we are hopeful we can reach agreement with them both.”
Runners and spectators are expected to come from across central Scotland, and it is hoped the event will boost the town’s economy and profile, showcasing its parks and attractions.
The start and finish lines will be in the Beveridge Park, and the route will take in Dunnikier Park, Ravenscraig Park, Dysart harbour and Kirkcaldy waterfront.
The race will mostly be on road, with a couple of trail sections including part of the coastal path, although the exact route is yet to be finalised.
A Facebook page has been set up for the event ahead of entries opening.
It describes the event as Fife’s only half marathon with “free hills, complemented by fast flats and downhills for that elusive PB”.
In May 1988 more than 500 runners took part took part in what was billed as Kirkcaldy’s first half marathon.
The event, organised by Kirkcaldy College of Technology, set off from Dunnikier Park and finished in the Town Square.
