A police officer was badly injured when his patrol car was involved in a three vehicle crash as he responded to an emergency call.
A 87-year-old man and a woman were also taken to hospital after the smash in Kirkcaldy which occurred as the marked police car was travelling under blue light in Oriel Road at 4.50pm on Friday.
The patrol car and a red car are said to have collided on the road by the junction with Strathallan Drive. A white Audi TT was also involved.
It is believed that the injured police officer passed out for a short while. A second police officer in the patrol car escaped injury in the crash.
It is unclear where the officers were heading.
One nearby resident said she was sitting in her house when she heard “sirens and then a big bang”.
Three fire and rescue appliances, all from Kirkcaldy, were sent to the scene. They were called to the incident at 5pm.
One passerby said firefighters had to cut people out of all three vehicles, including the police car.
An Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 4.58pm on Friday, March 8, to reports of a road traffic collision in Kirkcaldy.
“Operations control mobilised three fire engines to the incident at Oriel Road involving three cars.
“Firefighters safely removed one casualty from one of the vehicles and passed them into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.”
Crews cut two casualties from the other cars and remained at the scene until 6.30pm.
Three further police patrol cars were quickly at the scene of the accident.
Shortly after, three ambulances and two further paramedic cars were sent.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.50pm following a collision involving three vehicles.
“The road is currently closed in both directions and we would advise motorists to avoid the area.”
The road reopened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
