The manager of Fife’s Connor Law has spoken of his heartbreak at the death of a boxer he tipped to be next world champion.
Glenrothes Boxing Club head coach Stevie McGuire took over as Mr Law’s manager after his predecessor Tommy Gilmour retired.
He had trained the young boxer from Kelty since his early years in the ring and said he was “part of my family”.
Since the news of Mr Law’s death on Monday night aged just 26, people from across the boxing community have been paying tribute to the three-time national amateur champion who had a professional record of 13 unbeaten contests.
Mr McGuire said: ‘We are devastated by the death of Connor Law. Connor was a special kid and a special boxer.
“He was part of Glenrothes Boxing Club since he was 15 years old. He achieved great highs as an amateur and we hoped for the same in his pro career.
“He was still unbeaten as a pro. When he turned professional with Tommy Gilmour I told Tommy this was his next world champion.”
Mr McGuire said it was an honour to take over as the super-middleweight’s manager.
“When Tommy retired from boxing I was honoured that Connor chose me to be the man that kept moving his career forward. He was excited to get back in the ring,” he said.
“As his trainer from a young boy learning his trade to his manager as a professional we had a close relationship and he was part of my family. We are heartbroken.
“The Law family, Glenrothes Boxing Club and the McGuire family ask for privacy at this distressing time.”
Police Scotland said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Law’s death.
