Neighbours have spoken of their shock after a 22-year-old Fife man was arrested over an alleged terrorist plot.
Armed counter terrorism officers swooped on an address in Glenrothes in the early hours of Saturday amid suspicions an occupant was preparing an act of terror.
He is being held in police custody and inquiries are ongoing.
Police moved to reassure members of the community, saying there was no evidence to suggest any further threat.
Shocked neighbours in Colliston Avenue, in the Pitteuchar area of the town, said they were astonished to hear the allegations.
The home at the centre of the probe is occupied by a family who have lived in the street for some time.
One man, who asked not to be named, said: “No way. I can’t believe that. The family have lived here for years.”
Another neighbour added: “The police must have got here at about 2am.
“They had guns and dogs and we know someone was taken away.
“I can’t believe something like this would go on in Glenrothes.”
As uniformed police guarded the front and rear of the two-store, terraced property, forensics experts in white suits and masks could be seen conducting a painstaking search inside.
They remained on the scene well into the evening, with police tape and tarpaulin eventually put up to seal the house off from view.
It remained taped off into Sunday, although there was no sign of any more police activity.
Police Scotland said the operation had been intelligence-led.
They added the man was arrested on suspicion of “engaging in conduct in preparation for committing acts of terrorism” contrary to section five of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Detective Chief Superintendent Phil Chapman said: “Our inquiries are ongoing in the Glenrothes area but I would like to reassure the public that there is no intelligence to suggest there is any further threat.”
Glenrothes SNP MP Peter Grant thanked the police for their efforts.
“I am aware of yesterday’s incident and I am grateful to Police Scotland for the work they are doing to keep all of us safe,” he said.
“As always, I would advise anyone who has concerns about a possible security threat to contact the police immediately.
As this is a live police investigation it would not be appropriate for me to comment further.”
