A renowned Fife ice cream parlour is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Brattesani’s Homemade Ice Cream still uses the original recipe of Giovanni Brattesani from 1919.
Considered an institution of Anstruther, many locals have fond memories of enjoying a sweet treat from the parlour and its rows and rows of sweetie jars.
The ice cream shop, part of Anstruther Fish Bar, now makes more than 100 different flavours.
Alison Smith, who owns it with husband Robert, said: “We are excited to be celebrating 100 years of Brattesani’s here in Anstruther.
“Born and brought up in Anstruther and St Monans ourselves, a visit to Brattesani’s was a special one.
“A vanilla cone was a childhood favourite of ours, along with the homemade penny ice lollies.
“Although slightly modified over the decades to comply with modern food safety requirements, we still follow Giovanni Brattesani’s original 1919 recipe and are proud to be the family taking this recipe into the next century.”
Giovanni moved to Scotland from Buffalo, USA, around the turn of the 20th Century. He was married in Italy but returned to Scotland to settle with his family.
Two of his 10 children, Jimmy and Terezina (Ena), later ran his Shore Street shop, which also sold confectionery and tobacco.
To celebrate the anniversary, Brattesani’s has challenged customers to come up with a new flavour and has appealed for old photographs of the shop and people enjoying an ice-cream from it.
Ice cream production manager Ann Banks said: “We are always on the lookout for new, bright ideas and are really looking forward to seeing what new flavours and creations our customers come up with.
“We would encourage everyone to be as creative and adventurous as possible with their ideas for the competition.”
Entry forms are available in the Shore Street shop or from the Anstruther Fish Bar Facebook page.
The top three will be put to a public vote on September 16, with the winner announced on September 23.
