VIDEO: Residents rescued by boat as homes are evacuated in Fife flood chaos

Homes have been evacuated due to flooding and roads are impassable after a torrential downpour hit Fife.

A number of residents in Park Road, Rosyth, were forced to leave their properties after a nearby burn overflowed, with homes left flooded.

Streets in the town have been completely cordoned off by the emergency services after being left under water as a result of the downpour, with properties cut-off.

Firefighters assisted in the evacuation of residents in the area.

One woman said her neighbour had to be rescued from his home on a dinghy.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it carried out two water rescues.

Six fire and rescue appliances – including two water rescue units – were sent to the scene from Glenrothes, Lochgelly and Marionville in Edinburgh at 3.53pm.

Park Road resident Annette Young said: “I was out shopping with my sister and we got a phone call when on the motorway. We actually got stuck in traffic because of the flooding but when we came down it was like this.

“It’s now in my house. My house is flooded. When I looked in it was all over the floor. I can’t get in. They evacuated us.

“The man next door he is really ill. He got brought out on a boat.”

Rescuers had to retrieve the 65-year-old’s medication from her home.

Park Road Primary School was surrounded by flood water, however it was not known on Wednesday night if the school had suffered damage.

Fife Council was to assess the school, with more information to follow.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said the service had been called to assist with a number of flooding incidents across the region.

On Wednesday night, speaking about the Park Road evacuations, she added: “We are still in attendance there. It is still on-going. Three appliances are there assisting the residents.”

Photos on social media also showed bad flooding on Queensferry Road in Rosyth.

Earlier on Wednesday, southbound traffic on the M90 from Halbeath was slowed to 20mph for a while due to excess surface water and a number of other main roads are said to be impassable.

Dunfermline is also said to have been badly hit by the rainfall.

Glenrothes was also hit on Wednesday, with Woodside Road becoming impassable due to the sheer volume of water.

Motorists trying to drive under the bridge found themselves up to their registration plates in water and many were forced to turn back.

The car park at the town’s Asda store was also affected, while drivers were also warned about raised or missing manhole covers in a number of streets.

Other areas affected include Cowdenbeath High Street, the Dunfermline to Crossgates Road and the road between Lumphinnans and Lochgelly.

Part of the M90 Edinburgh to Perth road was closed northbound near the admiralty junction from about 4.15pm to 4.30pm due to flooding.

Drivers have been warned to take care and not to drive through flood water if they do not know how deep it is.

The B9037 between Woodhead Street, High Valleyfield, and the main A985 has been closed since Tuesday night and drivers have been urged to avoid the area.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued flood alerts for Fife, Dundee, Angus, and Perth and Kinross.

In a statement the organisation said: “Heavy thundery showers are likely throughout Wednesday in the region.

“If your area is affected by a heavy thundery shower, this may lead to localised flooding from surface water and small watercourses.

“The greatest risk is if these occur over built-up areas and the transport network with possible impacts including flooding of low-lying land, roads, properties and disruption to travel.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering the whole of Fife and Tayside, which will be in place until Thursday.
