Oil spill on Fife coastline at North Queensferry under investigation

An oil spill on the Fife coast by the Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing is being probed.

An oil spill affecting the Fife coastline is under investigation.

The extent of the pollution at North Queensferry, beneath the Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing, is yet to be determined however it was said to be localised.

Officers from Fife Council are probing the spill with environment agency Sepa and Forth Ports.

Bill Liddle, council service manager, said: “We’re currently working with partners to investigate an apparent oil spill affecting the coastline around the Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing.

“The exact extent of the pollution is being determined.”

A Sepa spokeswoman said: “The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is working with partner organisations, including Fife Council and Forth Ports, to investigate possible sources of a localised oil spill at North Queensferry.”

An oil spill further along the Fife coast earlier this year cost around £600,000 to clean up.

Despite an investigation by Sepa, the Marine and Coastguard Agency and Forth Ports the source was not identified and Fife Council had to foot the bill.

Beaches at Limekilns and Charlestown were closed to the public for several weeks as a result of the incident.
