ExxonMobil’s beleaguered Mossmorran plant has been shut down for a month.
It comes amid yet another bout of unplanned flaring at the Fife Ethylene Plant.
The petrochemical giant told the Scottish Environment Protection Agency on Thursday that the ageing plan had been successfully shut down.
The announcement came as partners, including Sepa, Fife Council, NHS Fife, Health Protection Scotland and Police Scotland, met to assess the situation.
ExxonMobil said the plant, on the outskirts of Cowdenbeath, was expected to remain closed for four weeks while remedial maintenance was carried out.
Sepa is continuing to carry out air quality and noise monitoring at several locations in Auchtertool, Lochgelly and Donibristle to give the public reassurance.
The environmental watchdog said the monitoring shoed the quality of the air was “in line with expectations of controlled flaring events”.
Sepa has also confirmed it will fully investigate the current incident which has seen flaring at the plant for days.
It is expected to issue an update today on its investigation into unplanned flaring which happened earlier this year.
