A 42-year-old man has died while kite surfing off the Fife coast.
Police confirmed the emergency services were made aware of an incident at Largo Bay, near, Elie, shortly after noon on Wednesday.
A major rescue operation was launched after it was reported the man had been seriously injured.
It has since emerged he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coastguard crews from Leven and Kinghorn, in addition to both lifeboats from Anstruther RNLI, were involved in the rescue effort.
The police, ambulance and fire services also attended the scene.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland confirm a 42-year-old mam has died while kite surfing near Leven.
“Emergency services were made of the incident shortly after 12.10pm on Wednesday September 11.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin are aware.
“There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said it received a call at 12.05pm to attend to a patient near Shell Bay.
“We dispatched two ambulance crews, our special operations response team, Helimed and a trauma team to the scene,” he added.
People living in the East Neuk reported around a dozen emergency vehicles, including a trauma unit, heading towards Elie over lunchtime.
