A car which struck a teenager in Kirkcaldy was a police vehicle on routine duties.
The 16-year-boy was hit on Dunnikier Way, near Asda, on Wednesday afternoon.
He escaped serious injury but an appeal has been issued for witnesses to the collision, which occurred around 3.15pm.
Police confirmed reports from members of the public who saw the smash that the Vauxhall Corsa involved was an unmarked force vehicle.
Due to police involvement in the collision, a report has been made to the police watchdog which may launch an investigation.
Officers in the car leapt to the aid of the boy, who is understood to have suffered a broken knee and cuts and bruises.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that a Police Scotland vehicle was involved in a collision with a 16-year-old male pedestrian on Dunnikier Road in Kirkcaldy around 3.15pm on Wednesday, September 18.
“The pedestrian did not suffer serious injuries. Nobody from the vehicle was injured.
“Officers were not responding to an emergency call and were on routine duties.
“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 2289 of 18 September.”
A spokesperson for the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner (Pirc) said: “Police Scotland have referred the circumstances of the incident and we are assessing the matter to determine whether a full investigation is required.”
Eye witnesses told how the boy was treated at the scene after being thrown into the air by the impact.
Scott Blaney, who was two vehicles behind the unmarked police car, praised the quick action of the officers immediately following the crash.
He said: “Fortunately, he [the driver] was slowing down for the roundabout or it could have been much more serious.
“Full praise to the policeman and the police woman. They were out the car like darts to help him.”
The busy stretch of dual carriageway, which is close to St Andrews RC High School, has been the scene of several fatal and serious collisions over the years.
A 10-year-old boy has killed when he was hit by a car travelling at 86mph 15 years ago.
In 2012 two women died after being hit by a speeding Land Rover Discovery at a pedestrian crossing.
A Pirc investigation into a collision involving a police car in Kirkcaldy in March found the officer driving was not to blame.
Officers were responding to a 999 call when they were involved a three-vehicle smash on Oriel Road which left an elderly man seriously injured.
