The cab of the articulated tanker, operated by Aberdeen-based Taylors Industrial Services was completely engulfed by the blaze.
The driver is thought to have escaped from the truck after pulling over at the side of the dual carriageway.
It is not known what, if any material, was being carried in the tanker.
Local diversions have been place.
Traffic Scotland stated the closure was expected to last until 2.30pm.
The scene of the dramatic blaze is a few miles north of a serious accident which led to delays for northbound drivers earlier on Wednesday.
