The Carnoustie and District ward was the tightest of all the Angus Council elections, with the Conservative candidate Terry O’Halloran missing out despite receiving almost 900 votes.
Mark McDonald of the SNP fought back from his defeat in last year’s by-election, which was won by David Cheape (Independent), who was re-elected.
Independent Brian Boyd retained his seat, but Bill Bowles (Independent) lost his position in the council chambers.
Mr McDonald said: “I’m very pleased that there’s a SNP councillor in Carnoustie again.
“I want to be a really approachable councillor to all the people in the ward regardless of what party they support.”
Mr Boyd said: “The election was a little bit closer than I was hoping for. I am very happy to be re-elected.”
Mr Cheape added: “I am happy to be able to continue the work I’ve done as a councillor over the past few months.
“I think the result showed that it’s still important for people to have local candidates.”
