An elderly woman on a mobility scooter was killed after being involved in a
collision with a car in Arbroath yesterday.
Crash investigators examined the scene following the collision, which happened outside St Mary’s Church in Ponderlaw Street around 1pm.
Police confirmed a woman in her seventies had died last night as a result of the accident.
Ponderlaw Street remained closed for several hours after the lunchtime incident that left residents in a state of shock.
It is not known if the woman was on the pavement or the road when the accident happened – although the scooter was still upright on the pavement when crash investigators were conducting their examination.
Debris – what looked to be a car bumper – was lying next to the scooter.
One woman said: “There were blue lights everywhere and there was a police cordon up at both ends of the road.
“There is a lot of sheltered housing around here and a lot of elderly people use the church.
“It’s just terrible to think something like this could happen – I think everyone is in shock.”
The street was the site of a fatal road traffic collision in 2015, when a vehicle collided with an elderly woman.
