An Angus councillor has issued a stark warning that someone will be killed unless a rural speed limit is slashed.
Arbroath West, Letham and Friockheim Liberal Democrat Richard Moore wants the current 60mph speed limit to be cut to 40mph at Dunnichen.
Mr Moore has raised the issue with Angus Council officers following a spate of crashes at the blackspot over many years which shows no sign of easing.
One of the worst happened earlier this year when a driver was cut free by firefighters after his vehicle overturned near Braefoot Cottage following a crash in January.
Mr Moore said: “The road through Dunnichen is tricky.
“Walls around the long bend have been knocked down by cars six times. All these incidents had speed as a contributory factor.
“The most spectacular crash was at the gates of Dunnichen House earlier this year. The frequency of accidents seems to be increasing.
“I’d like to see the 60mph speed limit cut to 40mph to prevent someone being killed.”
Dunnichen – which is situated between Letham and Forfar – contains four junctions very close together, with poor sight lines and tight bends.
Mr Moore said he is “surprised there hasn’t been a serious accident already”.
He said: “Vehicles of all sizes cross over the white line on the corners.
“They don’t leave themselves enough room to manoeuvre if a car is coming out of one the side roads. The obvious solution is to reduce speeds.”
Mr Moore has already raised the issue of a speed limit with council officers and is hopeful of a positive outcome.
He added: “The current limit is the national speed limit and I’d like to see it become a 40mph zone.
“Some people coming down the hill from Burnside are frightened to turn right.
“They turn left and use the triangle in front of the church to turn round.”
An Angus Council spokesman said: “Councillor Moore has raised the issue with roads officers who are now investigating the matter.”
