Air traffic management facilities in several Scottish airports, including Dundee, will be centralised to Inverness.
Dundee will be the last of the airports managed by Highland and Islands Airport Limited (Hial) to transfer to the new system.
The operator has identified New Century House in Inverness as the location for a new Combined Surveillance Centre, which will act as a central hub for air traffic management.
There are no planned reductions in staff numbers as a result of the project.
Hial have cited similar tower technology used across the globe, including Sweden, Norway and London, to show it is “proven” method.
Other airports run by Hial include Sumburgh, Kirkwall and Stornoway.
Dundee has the highest number of aircraft movements of any of Hial’s airports, but most of the these are general aviation and training flights, as opposed to scheduled flights.
Because of this, it will be the final airport to transition to the new system and a date for this will be announced “in due course”.
Inglis Lyon, Hial managing director, said: “The strategic programme decision made by the Board will move us into the implementation phase of the project and allow detailed operational decisions to be made.
“Our focus continues to be on aviation service delivery and providing a safe, modern and efficient means of handling aircraft for the regions and the islands in the future.”
