Mum to set up charity in honour of ‘incredible’ Dundee girl Freya Skene

The mother of tragic schoolgirl Freya Skene is to set up a charity in her memory.

‘Freya’s Wish’ will honour the seven-year-old from Dundee, who died in an accident at the River Braan in Highland Perthshire in July.

Her mum, Brooke Reid, is working to make the charity official but has already raised more than £2,000 through an online fundraising page.

She hopes Freya’s Wish funds can be used to help parents make special memories with their loved ones.

Brooke, 26, said: “Our hearts have stopped and will never be the same without our Freya but from now on our purpose is to keep her memory growing, while helping parents within Dundee create beautiful memories with their children.

“The one thing  keeping us strong is our endless memories and love we had together which is why I am in the process of starting up this charity.

“Memories are so important but I know from experience that they aren’t always in financial reach so I want to break down the barriers and see families create beautiful memories with their children in memory of our Freya.

“We hope in future to come we will see families across the whole of Scotland creating beautiful memories but to begin with we will be starting with families in Dundee.”

Until Freya’s Wish is registered as an official charity, Brooke has set up a Go Fund Me page, which already has more than £2,000 in donations.

Some of the money was raised when she climbed Ben Nevis with partner Sean McKiddie, Freya’s father, Robert Skene, and other family and friends.

Brooke is also creating a ‘rainbow walk’ at the DPM legal graffiti park in the Hilltown, where local artist Syke, real name Symon Mathieson, painted a mural of Freya, so people who loved her will have a place to remember her.

“She was the most incredible little girl who was loved by everyone she met, she has a very strong legacy with in Dundee and is loved by so so many,” Brooke said.

“She is perfect in every way still to this day.

“Everyone who knew Freya can say that she lived life to the fullest.

“She was kind, caring and would do anything to be involved in things that helped create change.

“We were so blessed to have her in our lives.”
