Boxing fans have paid a touching tribute to tragic Dundee boxer Mike Towell ahead of Ricky Burns’ clash with Kiryl Relikh in Glasgow.
A 10-bell salute rang out at the Glasgow Hydro as the packed crowd paused to remember the 25-year-old, who passed away last week after suffering serious injuries in his fight against Welshman Dale Evans.
The fitting tribute – often seen in ring sports to honour someone who has passed – came as the entire boxing family gathered together to celebrate the late boxer’s life.
Mr Towell died at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after having to be stretchered from the ring after a fifth-round loss to Evans in a St Andrew’s Sporting Club fight.
A fund for Mr Towell’s family has already surpassed the £40,000 mark, thanks in part to the support of British legend Ricky Hatton, and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon sent the condolences of MSPs to Mr Towell’s loved ones earlier this week.
