Dundee’s most famous ship will reopen to the public tomorrow following months of refurbishment – made possible thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign.
The RRS Discovery has been closed since last year to allow for its masts and rigging to be repaired, securing the landmark for generations to come.
The seven-month refurbishment programme was helped by a £40,000 crowdfunding campaign.
The vessel’s masts and rigging came down for repairs and were transported to a Gloucester-based shipyard, T. Nielsen & Co, who spent four weeks replacing the parts.
The Discovery carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first successful trip to the Antarctic – known as The Discovery Expedition.
