Dundee’s new multi-million pound train station hotel will open its doors next week just in time for The Open championship teeing off.
The Courier has been given a sneak preview of what guests arriving at Sleeperz Dundee next week can expect – including a spectacular view of the iconic V&A museum and its near neighbour RRS Discovery.
The new 120-bedroom hotel will welcome its first guests from Monday, the same day on which the completely remodelled train station complex also begins operating.
The development has taken almost three years to complete, with contractors Balfour Beatty facing a race against time to ensure the building was complete and the keys handed over ahead of The Open championship at Carnoustie.
A total of 40 staff have been recruited and trained up in recent months to deal with the expected influx of visitors to Dundee for the golf and the V&A’s grand unveiling later this year.
Manny Baber, general manager at Sleeperz Hotel Dundee, said: “Open for The Open is a great thing to be able to tell Dundee and Scotland. We’re taking bookings now and rooms are selling fast.”
The Dundee hotel is design led and features vibrantly coloured and lit rooms and a lounge bar space looking out towards Slessor Gardens.
The hotel sits atop the new Dundee railway station, which has been designed to be far more user-friendly and welcoming than its much criticised predecessor.
The concourse includes a cafe facility and an improved retail offering and a new light-filled glass link corridor has been created to allow passengers to move between platform and street level.
David Myers, chief executive of Sleeperz Hotels, said: “The regeneration of Dundee has been a long term project and the vision of a vibrant cultural city, open for business and tourism, has been fully realised.
“We’re delighted to be opening here, creating up to 40 new jobs and enhancing the tourism offer for visitors and business travellers.
“I’d like to thank our partners at Dundee City Council and everyone involved in the build of this superb new hotel.”
Dundee is Sleeperz third hotel after Cardiff and Newcastle and the company is now mulling options in London, Glasgow and Manchester.
