Burberry-clad thieves terrorised an elderly couple in their own Dundee home before robbing them of hundreds of pounds.
Frances and Phillip Youngs, both of whom are in their 70s, were at their home in Strathtyre Avenue around 7.20pm on Wednesday when the robbers burst into their home.
They threatened the couple with a weapon – believed to be a knife before stealing cash and jewellery.
The cruel thieves – both of whom covered their faces with distinctive Burberry scarves – then stole a black Vauxhall Corsa from the driveway of the house and made their escape.
It is understood the vehicle belonged to the carer of the couple’s adult daughter, who is disabled.
Other residents of Ferryfields were told to “lock their doors” by police following the incident on Wednesday night.
One Strathyre Avenue resident said: “The police knocked on my door shortly before 9pm and asked if I had seen anything suspicious as somebody had walked into a house down the road and stolen some items.
“There was no indication from them of quite how serious it obviously was or that weapons were involved.
“It is a horrific thing to happen, especially to what is a fairly vulnerable family.
“My daughter returned home shortly after 9.30pm and said she had seen some police cars next to the house involved but I don’t really think anybody living around here initially realised quite how serious it was.
“The officer said that, in the circumstances, it would be sensible to keep the door locked but no more than that.
“I could then see that he went on to alert my neighbours.
“It is a bit of a cliché but this is a really quiet road and not the kind of place where these things happen.”
Officers from Police Scotland’s Tayside Division interviewed the couple again on Thursday morning.
They were said to be extremely shaken by the incident, although not physically injured.
It is believed the robbers had been trying various houses in the area before finding the Youngs’ home unlocked.
Detective Inspector Gavin McKinlay said: “Thankfully, the couple were unhurt but extremely shocked by the incident.
“We are keen to trace two men in connection with the robbery. They made off with ladies and gents jewellery, cash, currency and a black Vauxhall Corsa with the registration mark SG13 ZLZ.
“One of the men is described as being five foot eight inches tall, of slim build, with dark hair. He was wearing a grey knitted hat and a Burberry scarf over his face.
“The other man is described as been five foot eight inches tall, of slim build, with dark hair. He was wearing a hat and a Burberry scarf over his face. He was wearing a cream coloured jacket with a circular motif.”
DI McKinlay added: “Officers are carrying out door to door enquiries and a review of CCTV footage as part of the investigation. We believe there is no wider risk to the public but there will be a continued presence in the area whilst enquiries are ongoing”.
