A police helicopter has been spotted hovering over the M90 in Fife as the hunt for two men thought to have fled the scene of a fatal crash at the weekend continues.
The front seat passenger of a Renault Grand Scenic involved in the incident to the north of Kelty at around 11.05pm on Sunday died from his injuries at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, but the focus of the investigation has turned to two men who police revealed on Tuesday are believed to have been in the car at the time of the accident.
There has been a heavy police presence in the surrounding area in the last 24 hours as the investigation continues, and that is thought to have been bolstered by the presence of the police helicopter above Blairadam Forest and areas near junction four and five where the crash took place.
Police have also urged people living and working in the area to check their sheds and other outbuildings.
Efforts to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing, but Police Scotland confirmed in a statement there was more to the crash than first thought.
“Inquiries continue to formally identify the man who died and establish the full circumstances of this crash,” a spokesperson said.
“An investigation is also underway to trace two other men, who are believed to have been in the car at the time.
“There are concerns for their welfare and we’d urge anyone who was on the M90 at this time and saw two pedestrians, or anyone with dashcam footage who was travelling in the area, to get in touch.
“In particular, we’d also ask those living and working in the surrounding areas to come forward with any information which may be relevant and check their outbuildings.”
The collision, which took place around one-and-a-half miles north of Kelty between junction four and five, involved the Renault Grand Scenic and a Seat Leon, which subsequently struck the Renault as it was travelling northbound.
Emergency services found the front seat passenger of the Scenic with serious injuries and he was rushed to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
No details about the Scenic driver or any other parties involved were divulged by Police Scotland until yesterday afternoon, when officers confirmed they were hunting for two men they reckon were in the vehicle at the time of the smash.
The road was closed in both directions for almost seven hours and reopened at around 6.30am on Monday morning.
Inspector Greg Burns, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “We are carrying out inquiries to establish the full circumstances of this collision and would urge anyone who can help to contact police.
“We would be interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen these vehicles on the road before the collision or who may have passed the scene immediately following the incident.
“Anyone who was on the M90 and using a dashcam is asked to review their footage and let us know if you may have anything which could assist our investigation.
