Typhoon fighter jets will shortly be returning to Fife.
The RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert crews will temporarily move to Leuchars while runways at RAF Lossiemouth are resurfaced.
RAF Leuchars, now Leuchars Station army base, was previously home of the UK’s northern QRA force, which provides round-the-clock readiness to intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace.
QRA shifted to the Moray base in 2014 when the air force withdrew from the Fife station, which became an army barracks the following year.
RAF Lossiemouth said QRA will move to Leuchars mid-2020 and return later in the year.
Typhoon training and P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol operations will relocate to Kinloss Barracks.
Lossiemouth runways and other operating surfaces are being resurfaced and reinforced to enable Typhoon and Poseidon operations. A new purpose built strategic facility is being created for Poseidon.
The UK’s southern QRA crews are based at RAF Coningsby.
