Police in Fife have arrested a 26-year-old man after an image mocking the death of George Floyd was posted online.

The photograph depicting two young men, from north east Fife, provoked outrage after it was shared on social media on Tuesday night.

The original post has since been deleted but screenshots remain.

Officers said enquiries into the incident were ongoing.

George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died on a street in Minneapolis in the United States when a white police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes during an arrest.

The officer has been charged with third degree murder and the incident has sparked huge protests across world.

The image shows one man lying face down on the ground while the other, thought to be from Cupar, has his knee on his neck.

The man on top is staring into the camera with his arms flexed.

It is captioned “George Floyd challenge 2020”.

The picture has been shared hundreds of times on social media. It is thought police were contacted several times by different people.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers in Fife have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with an image relating to the death in the United States of George Floyd which has been circulating on social media.

“Enquiries into the incident, which was reported to Police Scotland on Tuesday June 2, 2020, are ongoing.”

Mr Floyd’s death has placed renewed focus on race relations in the US and elsewhere.

Four officers involved in his death have been sacked and days of looting and arson in the Minnesota city have boiled over into nationwide protests.

Mr Floyd was arrested after being accused of trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.

Police said he resisted arrest.
