Planning permission to build more than 100 new homes in a quiet Fife village has been extended for a further two years.
The major development in Coaltown of Wemyss was given the go ahead in June 2013 but permission is due to expire in six weeks.
Landowner William Wemyss has so far been unable to secure a developer for the site to the south of Main Street following a downturn in the economy,
But he has told Fife Council planners that he is confident an agreement will be reached soon.
The permission is for 125 houses for a plot of land which is separated from Main Street by a strip of mature woodland and a wall.
Planning officer William Shand said the local plan had not changed since the orginal planning application was approved.
“It is noted that no works on the site have started to date…,” he said.
“The applicant has however submitted supporting information to justify the extension of time requested.”
Mr Shand told the central area planning committee that consideration should be given to whether stalled sites such as the one in Coaltown were contributing to a shortfall in the supply of housing land.
“There is now interest in the site but not enough time to determine the required matters without the risk of losing the planning permission in principle,” he said.
“An additional two years would allow for the land transaction deals to be concluded and an application to be submitted within the first year of the extended time.”
