The legendary Flying Scotsman powered into Fife last night despite a debacle which saw the trip almost hit the buffers.
The iconic engine steamed over the Forth Bridge for its first visit to the kingdom in 16 years, drawing huge crowds of enthusiasts along the spectacular Fife Circle route.
Rail chiefs had axed the trip at the 11th hour after failing to assess the lines in time but pressure from the public and the Scottish Government saw it back on track.
Transport minister Derek Mackay branded the episode “farcical” and has ordered a full inquiry.
This was the Flying Scotsman’s first visit to Scotland since a multi-million refurbishment.
