The grim find is understood to have been made in the West Sands area of St Andrews on Sunday evening. The RNLI, Coastguard, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were all involved in the operation to recover the body around 7.30pm. It is thought a member of the public may have raised the alarm. At this stage it is not known whether the victim is male or female. Police Scotland confirmed that they were involved in an incident at the beach, but refused to give any other details. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service directed inquiries on the matter to police. The car park at the West Sands, close to the town’s famous Old Course was cordoned off. Local resident Innes Muir, 17, said: “I saw the RNLI out off the shore and then the Police, Fire and Coastguard. “I was told that someone saw a search helicopter out and the car park has been cordoned off.”
