There was train chaos on the line between Dundee and Edinburgh on Tuesday due to concerns for a person on the Forth Bridge.
Trains across the crossing were stopped in both directions with no services running for more than four hours after reports of a man on the structure at about 9.55am.
A Network Rail spokesman said they had received reports of the incident and immediately stopped services from crossing the iconic bridge.
There was believed to be concerns for the man’s welfare.
Services affected included the east coast main line and Fife circle trains between North Queensferry and Dalmeny.
Most northbound services from Edinburgh terminated at Dalmeny before returning to Waverley.
Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness trains were being diverted via Stirling in a bid to get some of the network moving.
Southbound services terminated at Inverkeithing,
Replacement buses were organised between affected stations.

“We have stopped trains from running and railway staff and police will go out and clear the line,” the spokesman added.

Trapped services heading towards Edinburgh will return to Invekeithing and terminate.

Trains to and from London were also affected and a spokesperson from London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said northbound services would terminate at Edinburgh, where buses would be provided to allow passengers to continue their journey.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers were called at 10.01am to the Forth Rail Bridge, North Queensferry, following a report concerning the welfare of a man.”

The coastguard and ambulance crews were also at the scene.
Scotrail said it was working closely with the emergency services.
Those travelling between Fife and Edinburgh have been urged to check the latest travel information before setting off.
UPDATE: The man was taken from the bridge just after 2pm and “taken to a place of safety”. Disruption is expected until 4pm.
