The number of self harm incidents at HMP Perth hasmore than doubled in three years, according to new figures.
There were 19 incidents in 2017, which more than doubled to 51 cases the year after. By 2019, the number had again risen, to 54 incidents.
The figures were obtained by The Courier through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted to the Scottish Prison Service (SPS).
The SPS highlighted the means of support available to those who self harm at the prison.
It said: “Following an incident of self-harm SPS staff, including those working in HMP Perth, will initiate a concern form and then interview the individual to determine if there was any intent to take their life.
“If there was any intent, the individual will be placed on the SPS Suicide Prevention Strategy.
“If there is an absence of intent to complete suicide and if the person is assessed as not at risk of suicide, then staff will make a referral to support services if appropriate.
“An NHS Healthcare Professional will be advised of any incidents of self-harm.”
Alex McClintock of Andy’s Man Club, a mental health support group for men, which operates within the prison said, despite the increase of incidents, work is being done to help those at need.
“Since the introduction of Andy’s Man Clu into HMP Perth we have seen a huge impact on guys attending the meetings who have been self-harming or with suicidal ideation to help through the other side and then to go on and start supporting their peers and eventually for some being able to attend meetings in the community.
“All our meetings are suspended at the moment with the community groups using an online format but due to social distancing we can’t hold meetings in the prison at the moment.”
Sharon Thomas, manager at mental health charity, Lighthouse for Perth says she believes this is a significant issue for prisons, and that more needs to be done to tackle the issue.
She said: “This is definitely an issue, but not only in Perth.
“A large proportion of the prison population suffer from some form of mental health problems.
“Many more resources are needed with regards to mental health identification and treatment.”
