The total number of positive coronavirus cases connected with a Coupar Angus chicken factory has surged to 43.
Nicola Sturgeon revealed the new figures for the 2 Sisters plant during First Minister’s Questions at lunchtime on Thursday, and hinted strongly that further restrictions could be put in place.
She said the total include 37 people who work at the factory and six of their contacts.
“This number will almost certainly grow,” she said. “We are stressing the importance of all workers at the plant self-isolating and getting testing.
“A mobile testing unit remains on site, and the factory has been closed down for a two week period.”
She added: “Given the nature and potential scale of this outbreak, we are considering carefully and urgently whether further restrictions are necessary.
“I will chair a further meeting of the Scottish Government’s resiliance committee later this afternoon.”
Earlier this week, Ms Sturgeon could not rule an Aberdeen-style lockdown in relation to the cluster.
