A far-right group has said there is “nothing” that can be done to stop its planned rally against a proposed Perth mosque next month.
The organisation known as the Scottish Defence League 2 (SDL2) plans to protest against the £1 million development on the city’s Jeanfield Road.
Now they claim to have “upset the local lefty politicians in Perth”, branding them “traitors”, adding that the demonstration at the city train station would be going ahead.
They were responding to comments made by local Conservatives, city council leader Ian Campbell and fellow councillor Chris Ahern, and local SNP MSP Roseanna Cunningham.
A statement posted to the SDL Facebook group said: “Looks like we have upset the local lefty politicians in Perth lol, we don’t care what they traitors say or think, local residents have asked us to come so we are coming, and there’s nothing they can do to stop us.”
The SDL2 claims it is responding to a plea for help from locals who are concerned there is not enough local parking to meet the needs of 600 worshippers at the site.
The mosque plans were approved by Perth and Kinross Council earlier this year.
Last week police said they would be deploying “appropriate resources” to “facilitate peaceful protest”.
In an earlier social media post the SDL2 had stated: “Local residents are furious that their objections have been ignored, the original planning application was for a 80 capacity mosque but the traitor council approved it for 600 in secret behind the local residents backs.”
