A singer has been banned from driving after falling asleep and smashing into the central reservation on his way home from a late-night recording session.
Connor Brown, 20, had just left Planet Studio in Dundee when he nodded off at the wheel and spun out of control on the A90 dual carriageway.
Brown, who released his debut single earlier this year, veered across the road and crashed into the barrier as he made his way back to his Perth flat.
Perth Sheriff Court was told yesterday that Brown – who had only passed his test a few months earlier – was tired after spending a long time in the studio.
Brown, now of Erskine Street, Dundee, admitted driving dangerously on the A90 Dundee to Perth road at Kinfauns on June 4 this year.
He admitted falling asleep and causing the vehicle to hit the central reservation.
Depute fiscal Mairi Graham told the court: “This happened on a long, sweeping left-hand bend at 2.25am. Police on patrol saw the accused’s car against the central crash barrier.
“It had extensive impact damage to the front offside. They saw the accused exit the driver’s seat and saw he was the only person in the vehicle.”
Brown told the officers: “I just finished work in Dundee, driving home, I was tired and I must have fallen asleep for a second.”
A full-scale clear-up was carried out because his vehicle was posing a danger to other road users.
Solicitor Doug McConnell, defending, said: “He realises what he did was wrong. He had been living and studying in Perth.
“He had gone to the recording studio in Dundee and had been working there for most of the day. It was 2.30am and he made the stupid decision to return to Perth at that time.
“He was getting in the car and didn’t feel too tired, but it was because of tiredness that this incident occurred. He apologises to the court and to anyone affected by this.”
Mr McConnell said his client had only got his full driving licence in December last year and that the incident had “been a life lesson for him”.
Sheriff Lindsay Foulis banned Brown from driving for a year and fined him £800.
He said: “This could have resulted in very serious or fatal injury to yourself or other people.”
He ordered Brown to resit the extended driving test.
